Department: Laboratory
Reports Directly to: Laboratory Manager
The primary function of this role is to deliver high-quality clinical care, including assessment, examination, treatment, and case management, within a remote multidisciplinary team to improve workers’ health through culturally appropriate primary care.
The laboratory technician is responsible for collecting blood and other test specimens as requested by doctors, ensuring proper specimen handling and delivery to maintain integrity. The technician will report to the Emergency Physician/Lead..
Key Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
- To utilize high quality technical skills to accurately collect and label test specimens exactly as outlined in each clinic requisition as guided by the standard operating procedures.
- Identify the most technically appropriate method for obtaining specimens with regards to the different categories of patients while causing minimal discomfort.
- Process and prepare collected specimens for laboratory testing. Perform precise and accurate rapid screening procedures where applicable as directed by the standard operating procedures.
- Ensure all collected test specimens are managed carefully with timely results received by the doctors.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service when dealing with patients and colleagues.
- Participate in and support all quality assurance and quality improvement programs.
- Assist the Senior Medical Doctor in the compilation of data for the laboratory’s monthly reports.
- Perform any other related task that may be assigned.
- Ability to follow instructions and with keen attention to detail.

- Demonstrate high levels of organization and concentration.
- Participate in local community health initiatives as directed and agreed by the Emergency Physician/Lead.
Education & Experience
Professional/academic Qualification
- A diploma or higher in a medical laboratory science field.
- Must be registered and hold a valid current Allied Health Professional Council Uganda practicing license.
- Minimum of 3 years working experience in a busy clinical or medical research laboratory.
- Excellent phlebotomy skills following good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) guidelines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good command of written and spoken English.
- Experience of remote primary and emergency care is advantageous.
Critical skills
- Good written and spoken English.
- Good knowledge of the operation and components of vehicles.
- Good communication skills and problem-solving abilities
- Thorough knowledge of road rules and regulations.
- Safe/defensive driving skills.
- Basic mechanical knowledge is of benefit
Other requirements:
- Proof of Hepatitis B Immunity and COVID vaccination status.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Medical Fitness Certificate for remote site work.
