Pre-eclampsia Awareness Month

May is Pre-eclampsia Awareness Month, and on May 22nd, we observe World Pre-eclampsia Day, highlighting a condition that affects 5-8% of pregnancies in Uganda

Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organ systems, most often the liver and kidneys. It typically occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy and can pose significant risks to both the mother and baby if left untreated.

What causes it? While the exact cause of pre-eclampsia is unknown, it’s linked to problems with the placenta, immune system issues, or genetic factors.

Who’s at risk? Risk factors include a history of high blood pressure (preexisting hypertension), kidney disease, diabetes, obesity, first-time pregnancy, multiple gestation (twins or more), history of pre-eclampsia, and pregnancies in very young women (under 18) or older women (over 35).

Warning signs to watch for: Severe headaches, dizziness, Blurred vision or light sensitivity, Swelling of hands/face, Upper abdominal pain, Sudden weight gain, Reduced baby movements and reduced urination.

Pre-eclampsia requires close monitoring by your healthcare provider. Treatment depends on the gestation and severity and may involve medication to lower blood pressure, regular ultrasounds, and blood/urine tests. In severe cases, early delivery might be necessary to protect both mother and baby.

Attend all antenatal appointments. Report any symptoms like severe headaches, vision changes, swelling, or abdominal pain. Maintain a healthy diet, avoid smoking and alcohol, manage chronic conditions, and take any prescribed supplements like low-dose aspirin.

Start prenatal care early. Track your blood pressure regularly. Stay active, hydrate well, and reduce stress. Follow your doctor’s guidance closely.

Expectant mothers, especially those with risk factors, are encouraged to visit us for prenatal screenings and personalized care.
